In March we will be on the lookout for signs of Spring. Trees will begin to burst into vibrant green leaves. Pussy willows and Lenten roses will return to delight our eyes. Perhaps we will spot a killdeer or Eastern Phoebe, or we will find some yellow bellied sapsuckers lapping up sweet sap beginning to flow with the spring thaw. Robins will be keen to feed on the juicy worms after the long winter months. Amorous cottontails might be scampering about. We might even see a mourning cloak that has wintered over. Spring marks the beginning of their mating season, when female mourning cloaks will find a host plant and begin to lay their eggs. Host plants include willow, American elm, hackberry, hawthorn, wild rose, birch and poplar.
